Dream Job #2

Female Singer

“Dreams are…illustrations from the book your soul is writing for you.” —Marsha Norman, The Fortune Teller (1987)

I wrote a while back that one of my dream jobs would be as a yoga instructor at a beach; that way I could combine my favorite place to be (the beach) with one of my greatest passions (yoga). I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to do when I grow up, so dreaming about the perfect day job has been on my mind.

I just recently had the opportunity to see the Lilith Fair Tour at Blossom Music Center. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a concert at Blossom, and it reminded me how much I love to hear  live music. The performances by Court Yard Hounds, Mary J. Blige, Sarah McLachlan and the rest of the Lilith Fair 2010 lineup were incredible, and it was a beautiful balmy summer night to sit outside under the stars while enjoying live music.

As I sat watching the performances, I was reminded of one of my other all-time favorite dream jobs. I want to be a backup singer for a band. How cool would it be to stand on the stage behind a famous musician, swaying to the music and singing backup vocals? To hear the roar of the audience, to move in a sultry, choreographed style with your co-backup singers, wearing stylish outfits, traveling around the world, and performing each night to huge audiences. Yeah, I could handle that!

I just have one major problem with this dream-job opportunity—I can’t sing!

At the audition I’m sure I’d get an A+ in the dance moves department (I’ve got the Supremes hand motions and hip sway perfected), but the singing would be a bit of a stretch. I realize this shortcoming but, hey, it’s not going to keep me from dreaming. I’ll keep practicing my vocals every day in my car, with the radio blasting, and don’t worry I won’t be quitting my day job anytime soon.

If you get the chance, I highly recommend Lilith Fair 2010, a true celebration of women in music.

hahahaha! Love it! Perhaps the two of us could team up. We could be the Freddy-Krueger's-Nails-Down-a-Blackboard-Singers.

Oh god this post made me laugh! I can't sing at all either; am so off key that it's not even funny. It's good to keep on trying though; hope is what keeps us young and alive! And from what I've read in your about page, you seem very passionate about music. I'm sure you don't sing as badly as you say you do.
Sing because you love it! I'll let you back mr up anytime! Visiting fr the sits forum :)

Steph – I may just have to take you up on that offer for a background singer gig! Glad I made you laugh – it's one of my goals in life!
