The Netflix for Audiobooks (or How to Avoid Road Rage)

The happy women driving in a carDo you love to read?

Do you feel like you never have time to read?

Do you waste a ton of time each week sitting in your car?

If you answered yes to all of these questions, than I have found the solution to remedy your road rage and help you plow through that summer beach reading list.

If you have never listened to a book on tape, you have got to try it. I have been a longtime fan of audiobooks, and, believe me, if I didn’t have them at my disposal, I seriously would have purchased an Uzi and gone postal when I was making my daily heinous traffic-congested commute to corporate craziness. It makes the ride go so much faster, and I can’t tell you how many times I sat in my car in the driveway when I got home, so I could continue listening to a good part. Yeah I looked like a geek, but I was totally relaxed and had actually enjoyed my drive home from work.

I used to go to the library to get my fix, and I’m not knocking the public library system, but let’s face it: When you’re a busy working woman, who has time to go to the library and have the stress of a pending due date and fine? That’s where Simply Audiobooks comes in. This online audiobook service works just like Netflix. You get online, browse for the books you want, place the ones you want on a list, and they start coming in the mail. Once you finish a book, you mail it back in the postage-paid envelope they provide, and a few days later you get another book. It’s a beautiful thing.

Best-selling books you listen to in the comfort of your car (or wherever you choose), with no due dates and no late fees. You can get started with a one-book-a-month plan for as low as $15 a month; if you use it religiously, you’ll save at least 70% on what you would if you purchased the books. Oh and I forgot to mention they offer a free 15 day trial, so you can try before you buy.

Need instant gratification (who doesn’t)? They offer an audiobook download program where you can get your picks immediately and keep them.

Here’s two of the best fiction audiobooks that I listened to recently that I would like to recommend.

The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. Seriously, this audiobook saved my life when I went on a long road trip with my mother. If we had to sit in the car together for over ten hours, we would have killed each other. Instead, we got to listen to a great story that took us all the way to Virginia Beach, back, and then some. The Help is the story of three women in Jackson, Mississippi, in the early ’60s with the courage to start a movement that forever changes a town and the way black and white women view each other. Listening to it as an audiobook is cool because each woman’s story is told with a different voice. Even if you don’t listen to it on audio, I highly recommend reading this book.

Sideways, by Rex Pickett. Yes, this is the same Sideways movie that came out a few years back about two men who do some serious male bonding on a road trip to the California wine country. The movie was great but the book is even better, and listening to it on audio rocks! I loved listening to it so much that I rented the movie again, and I have to say that as good as it was, the screenwriters really botched up the story on the big screen (the book is always so much better!). The storytelling on the audiobook is delivered in fine form by Scott Brick. This one will keep you laughing and thirsting for a great glass of Pinot, but please wait until you get home to imbibe!

I’m currently listening to Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and although it will probably take me a year to listen to (there are 50 discs), I am really enjoying it. The storyteller is Scott Brick again and I now understand why he has recorded over 400 audiobooks for some of the most high profile authors, he really does have a golden voice.

Listening to a book on a CD may not be as fun as reading a book on the beach, but you don’t have to worry about sand, reapplying sunscreen (unless you’re in a convertible), and you’ll get to your destination in a more enjoyable way and knock one more book off your summer reading list.
